    Hi everyone,

Joe De Costa (jodec) has a working YACP chat server, in case you’ve still got old Atmo worlds lying around. You can try it out at MingerWorld (.aer). It’d be nice if we all hooked our worlds back up to working chat servers, so those with “Atmostalia” can show off their creations the way they were intended – with multi-user chat and avatars. Besides, you’d be fighting the good fight against bitrot and its less evil twin, linkrot.

If you’re interested, Joe seems open to others linking their worlds against his server. Just ask kindly. He has a detailed tutorial on setting up the Atmosphere Community Server, and he has the source available if anyone wants to start their own.

As far as I know, Joe’s is currently the only working YACP server on the Internet. If I weren’t behind my school’s firewall, I’d add my own to the list. If you know of any other working servers, I’m sure all us stubborn Atmo diehards would appreciate any leads.

Turns out there’s another YACP server as well. Martin Judd has been running some of his worlds on (what I presume is) his own server. I’m not sure if he’d be okay with others’ worlds using it, though.

Hey, sounds like interesting stuff, thanks for sharing this. Too bad we need a Linux server though, it's not exactly simple to set up for most of us.

At the least, it’s now possible to use someone else’s server for your worlds. As for setting one up yourself, there are lots of ways of to run Linux programs on a Windows box. (Actually, jodec needed a Windows machine, too.) So you can definitely get around needing a dedicated Linux server. One way is to use a Mac. ;^) But in theory, it should be possible to set up the ACS on a Windows computer using cygwin. I’m looking into whether you’d have to change any code to get ACS working in cygwin.

Granted, cygwin itself is a pain to install and use, if you’re not familiar with Linux. But if you learned to wait “two weeks”, using cygwin can’t be that much harder, can it? :^P

If you have Windows 2000 or XP Pro, there’s also Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX, though Wikipedia says it’ll only be available for download until next year.

    Hey Minger
I would love to be able to dust off my worlds and hook them up to a server. I went to Jodec's site and couldn't find any contact email tho.

    :~D

Greetings and a Happy New Year to you all :¬)

Whilst I did receive the Atmos builder CD, I never got the YACP Server programme, anyone got a copy of that I can play with? Seems funny to invite a few friends into my worlds and not be able to chat natively in there. I have a spare server with a few tb's of bandwidth I'd like to see how I can set that up.
